lol Square Enix mention in the title creates expectations
old-ass 80s maybe-MSX maybe-Famicom Japan exclusive detective game that less than 1% of nerds know existed... found it! The Portopia Serial Murder Case / ポートピア連続殺人事件, 1983, both on Famicom and MSX, and a bunch of other pre-pc computers. Developed by Chunsoft, published by Enix, glommed up by Square twenty years later when they merged into Square Enix, nineteen years ago.

When they did the Woodman thing they said "ii-ne", and the subtitles translated to "nice". This is accurate, but "ii-ne" (well, 「いいね！」) is also the "Like" button on Japanese social media. In context, especially with the thumbs up, I think they meant "LIKE!"

For reference, Portopia was created by a novice game designer by the name of Yuji Horii. He would go on to make a video game based on western tabletop RPGs. Something about dragons and quests, I believe.

Portopia also influenced a man to get into the video game industry. His name is Hideo Kojima, and I think he made a game about metal gears? Nowadays he makes games about ropes and tweets about Lycoris Recoil.

I just happened to download a scan of the first Famitsu issue out of curiosity and like the second topic after Zelda is Portopia. Glad a 2022 meme anime educated me beforehand
Crazy how back then this work had about the same prestige as working at a convenience store or a McDonalds. Also in the train battle segment. Doctor Yellow is the nickname for a bullet train that would be used for testing the train lines. The trains ensure that the standard gauge track used for Shinkansen services is sufficiently level and stable.

You don't see it very often so people joke about it being an omen of good luck or happiness for you to set eyes on it. That's why Pop-chan was able to win in the end.
